Language Development : 2 to 2 1/2 Years

The following are stages of language development for toddlers - ranging in age from 2 to 2 1/2 years of age.

Receptive

  • Comprehend several action words
  • Comprehends the prepositions 'in' and 'under'
  • Distinguishes between one and many
  • Listens to simple to stories
  • ID objects by their use
  • Comprehends different sentence structures (e.g. sentence, question, exclamation)

Expressive

  • 200-300 word vocabulary
  • Ask questions:  egocentric in nature
  • Says full name
  • Uses own syntax (look, me, no)
  • Can repeat up to 2 digits
  • Uses articles and conjunctions
